About the shop

General Questions FAQ

10 questions Get a quote →
How much does a custom boat cover cost?

It depends on the size of the boat, the fabric and features like zippered windows, support poles or snap-on fittings. Lavigne's templates your boat with a Proliner digital measuring system and quotes from those exact measurements, so the price is for your boat, not a size chart. Call 705-410-6872 or send the quote form for a price.

When should I order a winter boat cover?

Before haul-out. Demand for winter and storage covers peaks in September and October, so booking your measurement in late summer or early fall gets the cover made before freeze-up.

Do you come to measure my boat, or do I bring it in?

Both. Bring it to the Booth Road shop in North Bay, or Lavigne's can measure on site within the mobile service area. For Temiskaming Shores and Muskoka, travel is quoted on top of the job.

Can you repair my boat cover or canvas instead of replacing it?

Yes. The shop replaces zippers and snaps, patches tears, re-stitches seams and matches existing canvas colours where it can. If a repair won't last, you'll be told straight and quoted for a new cover instead.

Is restoring my pontoon worth it compared to buying new?

If the hull, pontoons and motor are solid, usually yes. A restoration replaces the seating, flooring, canvas and details for a fraction of a new boat's price, and you keep the boat you already know. Lavigne's will look at the boat and tell you honestly whether it's worth doing.

Do you fix car and truck seats too?

Yes. Automotive seat repair is a big part of the upholstery work, along with snowmobile and ATV seat covers.

Can you add a sound system during a pontoon restoration?

Yes. The sister company, Lavigne's Car Audio, works out of the same building and handles marine audio, so it can be done in the same visit.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. Lavigne's Canvas Co. offers a 10-year warranty on select fabrics, plus a workmanship guarantee on the work done in the shop. Ask which fabrics carry the 10-year coverage when you get your quote.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. Lavigne's offers customer financing through Financeit, a Canadian financing company, so you can spread the cost of a pontoon restoration, enclosure, cover, upholstery, flooring or awning over monthly payments. Financing is subject to credit approval. See the financing page or call 705-410-6872.

How do I get a quote?

Call the shop at 705-410-6872 or fill in the quote form on this page with your boat and what you need. Lavigne's will follow up with next steps.

Pontoon questions

Pontoon Restorations FAQ

5 questions See pontoon restorations →
How much does a pontoon restoration cost in North Bay?

It depends on the boat's length, how much you're replacing and the materials you pick. Lavigne's Canvas Co. prices restorations on hours and materials and gives you a written quote per boat after an inspection. For reference, a full pontoon enclosure on its own starts at $6,000. Call 705-410-6872 or send photos with the quote form for a ballpark first.

Is it worth restoring an older pontoon boat?

Usually, if the pontoons, deck and motor are in good shape. New seating, flooring and canvas make an older pontoon look and feel new for less than a new boat, and you keep a boat you already know. If the pontoons or deck are badly damaged, the shop will tell you honestly that a restoration isn't the right call.

How long does a pontoon restoration take?

It depends on how much is being done and the time of year. Seating alone is quicker than a full restoration with flooring and an enclosure. You'll get a clear timeline with your quote, and booking in the fall or winter gives you the best chance of having the boat back for spring.

Do I have to bring my pontoon to the shop?

Yes. Restoration work is done in the shop at 102 Booth Rd in North Bay so seating, flooring and canvas can be built and fitted together. Boaters bring pontoons in from North Bay, Lake Nipissing, West Nipissing, Temagami, Temiskaming Shores and Muskoka.

Can I finance a pontoon restoration?

Yes. Lavigne's Canvas Co. offers financing through Financeit, a Canadian financing company, so you can spread a restoration over monthly payments. Financing is subject to credit approval, and the work carries the same warranty either way.

Boat cover questions

Custom Boat Covers FAQ

5 questions See custom boat covers →
How much does a custom boat cover cost in North Bay?

There's no off-the-shelf price because every cover is made for one boat. The size of the boat, the type of cover, the fabric and extras like support poles, vents or zippered access all change the price. Lavigne's measures the boat with a Proliner and quotes from those measurements. Call 705-410-6872 or use the quote form and you'll get a ballpark first.

Is it too late to order a winter boat cover this year?

Not usually. The busiest time for winter covers is September and October, so the earlier you call the better, but a boat that's already out of the water can still be measured on its trailer. If the cover can't be ready before the snow, the shop will tell you up front so you can plan for this winter.

Is a custom boat cover better than shrink wrap?

Shrink wrap is plastic that gets cut off and thrown away every spring, so you pay for it again every fall. A custom cover goes back on in minutes each season, breathes so moisture can escape, and can double as a mooring or travel cover in the summer. Over a few seasons, a custom cover usually works out to the better deal.

Do I have to bring my boat in to be measured for a cover?

You can bring it to 102 Booth Rd in North Bay on its trailer, or the boat can be measured on site within the service area. Travel to Temiskaming Shores and Muskoka is quoted with the job. Once the pattern is taken, the boat doesn't need to stay at the shop while the cover is made.

How long does a custom boat cover last?

It depends on the fabric, how the boat is stored and how the cover is cared for. A cover that fits tight lasts longer because it isn't flapping in the wind or holding water. Select fabrics carry a 10-year warranty, and because your pattern is on file, a worn cover can be remade exactly or repaired in the shop.

Top & enclosure questions

Bimini Tops & Boat Enclosures FAQ

5 questions See bimini tops & enclosures →
How much does a bimini top or boat enclosure cost in North Bay?

It depends on the boat, the style and the windows. A bimini top costs the least, a camper top more, and a full enclosure the most because of the clear vinyl and zippers involved. As a guide, a full pontoon enclosure at Lavigne's Canvas Co. starts at $6,000. Every top is quoted per boat after it's measured. Call 705-410-6872 for a ballpark.

What's the difference between a bimini top, a camper top and a full enclosure?

A bimini top is open-sided shade. A camper top covers the cockpit from the windshield back, with side curtains so you can close it in. A full enclosure wraps the boat on every side with clear vinyl windows, so you can use it in wind, rain and bugs. Pontoon enclosures work the same way over the deck.

When should I order a new top or enclosure?

Fall and winter. Tops and enclosures get busy once the ice is off the lakes, so ordering in the off-season gives you the best chance of having it on the boat for the May long weekend. The boat can be measured on its trailer before it goes into storage.

Can you make a new top for my existing frame?

Usually, yes. If the frame is straight and solid, the new canvas is cut to fit it. If it's bent, corroded or the wrong height, the shop can supply a new frame so the top sits right and gives you the headroom you want.

Can you replace the windows in my enclosure without a whole new one?

Often, yes. If the canvas is still strong, cloudy or cracked windows can be cut out and replaced with new clear vinyl, and broken zippers can be swapped. If the canvas is worn out too, you'll be told it's time for a new enclosure.

Upholstery questions

Boat & Auto Upholstery FAQ

5 questions See boat & auto upholstery →
How much does boat seat upholstery cost in North Bay?

It depends on the number of seats, whether the foam is replaced and the vinyl you choose. A single seat repair costs far less than recovering a full boat interior. Lavigne's Canvas Co. quotes each job after seeing the seats or photos of them. Call 705-410-6872 or send photos with the quote form.

Should I recover my boat seats or replace them?

If the frame or base is solid, recovering is usually the better value. You get new vinyl, and new foam if needed, in the colours you want, for less than new seats. If a seat base is rotted, you'll be told before any work starts and it can be quoted with the job.

Do you do car and truck upholstery too?

Yes. Car and truck seat repair is a big part of the work, from a torn driver's seat bolster to a full bench seat, door panels and classic car interiors. Lavigne's Car Audio works out of the same building if you're doing a stereo at the same time.

Can you recover snowmobile, ATV and motorcycle seats?

Yes. Remove the seat, bring it to the shop and it can be recovered in tough vinyl in stock colours or a custom design, with new foam if the old foam has broken down.

Can you match my boat's original colours?

Usually very closely. Marine vinyl comes in a wide range of colours, and the shop will compare samples against your existing seats. On older boats where the original colour isn't made anymore, recovering every seat in a new scheme often looks better than matching one.

Flooring questions

SeaDek & Marine Flooring FAQ

5 questions See SeaDek & marine flooring →
How much does SeaDek cost in North Bay?

It depends on how much of the boat you're covering, the number of pieces, and extras like logos, two-tone borders or fish rulers. A swim platform pad is a small job; a full cockpit with hatches is a bigger one. Lavigne's Canvas Co. quotes flooring per boat. Call 705-410-6872 or send photos with the quote form for a ballpark.

Should I choose SeaDek, woven vinyl or marine carpet?

SeaDek suits fibreglass bowriders, ski boats, swim platforms and casting decks where you want a soft, non-skid surface. Woven vinyl is the usual pick for pontoon decks because it covers large areas, cleans easily and doesn't hold water. Marine carpet is still a good, lower-cost option for many fishing boats. The shop will recommend what suits your boat and how you use it.

Can SeaDek go over my old carpet?

No. The old carpet comes up first. SeaDek bonds to a clean, smooth surface, so the deck is cleaned and prepped before the new pieces go down. If anything underneath needs attention, you'll hear about it before the install.

Can you put my boat name or a logo in the flooring?

Yes. Boat names, family names, team logos, crests and patterns can be built into SeaDek in contrasting colours, along with fish rulers on casting decks. Send the logo file or a photo and the shop will show you how it will look.

How do I take care of SeaDek or woven vinyl?

Rinse it with fresh water and clean it with a mild soap and a soft brush. Avoid harsh solvents. Both materials are made for life outside, but a cover or top over the boat when it's not in use helps any floor last longer.

Awning questions

Awnings FAQ

5 questions See awnings →
How much does an awning cost in North Bay?

It depends on the type and size of the awning, the frame, the fabric and how it mounts to the building. A small window or entry awning costs much less than a wide retractable over a deck or a commercial storefront. Lavigne's Canvas Co. measures the site and gives you a written quote. Call 705-410-6872 to book a measure.

What should I do with my awning in the winter?

Keep a retractable awning rolled in from late fall to spring, because it isn't built to carry snow when it's open. For fixed awnings, the shop will tell you whether yours is designed to stay up through the winter or whether the cover should come off before the snow.

Do you measure and install on site?

Yes. Awnings are measured and installed on site for homes, cottages and businesses in North Bay and the surrounding area. Travel to Temiskaming Shores and Muskoka is quoted with the job.

Can you replace the fabric on my existing awning?

Often, yes. If the frame or arms are still in good shape, a new cover can be made in the shop to fit them, in a new colour or the same one. If the frame is worn out, you'll be quoted for a new awning instead.

Can you put our business name or logo on an awning?

Yes. Storefront and entrance awnings can carry your business name, logo and street number, so the awning works as signage as well as shelter.

Repair questions

Canvas Repair FAQ

5 questions See canvas repair →
How much does canvas repair cost in North Bay?

Small repairs like a zipper, a few snaps or a patch are usually quick and affordable. Re-windowing an enclosure or rebuilding a panel costs more. Lavigne's Canvas Co. looks at the piece and quotes before any work starts. Call 705-410-6872 or send photos for a ballpark.

Can you match the colour of my existing canvas?

Usually. The shop carries a range of marine canvas and vinyl colours and will match as closely as possible. On older, sun-faded canvas, a new patch may look brighter at first because the original has faded.

Can you replace the windows in my enclosure without a new top?

Yes. If the canvas is still strong, cloudy or cracked clear vinyl can be cut out and replaced, and worn zippers swapped at the same time. It's often far cheaper than a new enclosure.

Is it worth repairing an old boat cover?

If the fabric is still strong and the problem is a zipper, snaps, a torn seam or a worn spot, usually yes. If the fabric tears when you pull on it, leaks or is full of mildew, a repair won't last, and you'll be told that before you spend money on it.

When is the best time to bring in a repair?

Right after the boat comes out of the water in the fall, or over the winter. Spring is the busiest time of year, so getting repairs done in the off-season means your canvas is ready for launch.

Custom sewing questions

Industrial & Custom Sewing FAQ

5 questions See industrial & custom sewing →
How much does custom sewing cost in North Bay?

It depends on the size of the piece, the materials and how many windows, doors and zippers it needs. A small cover costs far less than a full UTV cab. Lavigne's Canvas Co. quotes every custom job before work starts. Call 705-410-6872 or send photos for a ballpark.

Do you make UTV and side-by-side cabs?

Yes. Full cabs, doors, rear panels and soft tops are made for side-by-sides from Yamaha, Honda, Polaris, Can-Am, CFMoto and others, including machines running tracks in the winter.

Can you make a cover for something that isn't a boat?

Yes. Trailers, machines, equipment, carports, mobility scooters and pet shelters have all come through the shop. If it lives outside and needs protection, it can probably be covered.

Can you copy my old cover or cab?

Usually. If the old piece fit well, it can be used as the pattern for a new one in fresh materials. If it never fit right, the shop will measure and pattern it from scratch instead.

Do I need to bring the machine to the shop?

It helps for cabs and fitted covers, because the piece is measured and fitted on the machine. For curtain walls, tarps and large covers, measurements and photos are often enough to start.

Measuring questions

Proliner Digital Measuring & CNC FAQ

5 questions See Proliner & CNC →
What is a Proliner?

A Proliner is a digital measuring system made by Prodim. A fine line pulled from the unit records exact points on the boat (windshield frame, rails, posts and snaps) and builds a digital template, replacing paper and plastic patterns.

Do I have to bring my boat to the shop to be measured?

No. Lavigne's can measure at the Booth Road shop in North Bay or on site within the mobile service area. For Temiskaming Shores and Muskoka, travel is quoted on top of the job. The boat does need to be measured in person; Lavigne's can't build a custom cover from photos or a size chart.

Can you make a replacement cover from my old pattern?

Yes. Digital patterns are kept on file, so a replacement cover, top or panel can be cut again from the same pattern if the boat and frame haven't changed.

Why does CNC cutting give a better fit?

Hand-cut panels drift a little on every cut. The CNC table cuts each panel to the exact shape of the digital pattern and marks the sewing lines, so seams line up, covers sit tight and water runs off instead of pooling.

What materials can the CNC table cut?

Marine canvas such as Sunbrella, marine vinyl for upholstery, clear vinyl window material, and other fabrics the shop uses for covers, tops, enclosures and seats.

Financing questions

Financing FAQ

6 questions See financing →
Who provides the financing?

Financing is provided by Financeit, a Canadian consumer financing company that works with businesses across the country. Lavigne's Canvas Co. is not the lender; your loan agreement is with Financeit.

What can I finance?

Pontoon restorations, boat enclosures and bimini tops, custom boat covers, boat and auto upholstery, SeaDek and marine flooring, and awnings. If it's on your Lavigne's quote, ask about financing it.

How do I apply?

Get your quote from Lavigne's first, then apply with Financeit online from your phone or computer. Call the shop at 705-410-6872 and we'll help you get started.

What interest rate will I get?

Rates, terms and any promotions are set by Financeit based on your application and are subject to credit approval. The shop can tell you about any current offers when you get your quote.

Can I pay the loan off early?

Financeit describes its loans as open loans, so you can pay off early or make extra payments without a penalty. Confirm the details in your Financeit agreement.

Is my work still covered by the warranty if I finance it?

Yes. Financed work carries the same 10-year warranty on select fabrics and the same workmanship guarantee as any other job.

West Nipissing questions

West Nipissing FAQ

5 questions See West Nipissing →
Will you come to Sturgeon Falls to measure my boat?

Yes. We do mobile measuring and installs across the region, including Sturgeon Falls, Verner, Field, Cache Bay and Lavigne. We bring the Proliner to your dock, slip or driveway and take the digital measurements there. If you would rather drive in, the shop is about 37 km east on Highway 17 at 102 Booth Rd in North Bay.

My boat stays in a slip at Minnehaha Bay. Can you work on it there?

Often, yes. Measuring for a mooring cover, bimini or enclosure can usually be done with the boat in the water, as long as we can safely get around it. Seat and floor work is easier at the shop, so for those jobs we may ask you to trailer the boat to Booth Road. Call us and we will sort out what makes sense.

Can my boat top fold down to fit under the West Arm bridges?

We can build a bimini or camper top that folds down cleanly, so it can be lowered for low bridges and for trailering. Tell us where you boat and how often you need to drop the top, and we will set up the frame and fittings to suit. Clearance depends on your boat, so always check before you go under.

Is it worth driving from West Nipissing to North Bay for canvas work?

For most people it is a single trip on Highway 17, about 37 km. Every cover and top we make is measured with a Prodim Proliner, cut on a CNC table and sewn in our shop, and the pattern stays on file. That means a close fit now and an easier replacement later, without you having to bring the boat back.

Do you work on snowmobile and UTV gear for people in Verner and Field?

Yes. Along with boats, we recover snowmobile, ATV and motorcycle seats, and we sew UTV and side-by-side cabs, doors and soft tops, plus snowmobile enclosures and trailer covers. Bring the machine to the shop, or send photos and measurements first and we will quote the job before any work starts.

Temagami questions

Temagami FAQ

5 questions See Temagami →
Can you build canvas for a boat that stays at an island cottage on Lake Temagami?

Yes. The easiest way is to bring the boat to the North Bay shop on a trailer at the start or end of the season so we can measure it with the Proliner. If the boat can't leave the lake, call us and we'll talk through whether on-site measuring at a landing or dock will work for it.

What kind of cover holds up best for a Temagami winter?

For a boat stored outside through a long northern winter, a fitted winter cover with support poles and vents works best. The poles carry the snow load and the shape lets meltwater run off rather than pooling. It's sewn from heavy marine fabric and measured to your hull, so it doesn't loosen and flap in the wind.

Do I have to drive to North Bay more than once?

Not usually. Many Temagami customers send photos first, then bring the boat down once for measuring and come back to pick up the finished work. Smaller jobs like repairs or a set of cushions can come in on their own, and your pattern stays on file, so a future replacement doesn't need another full measure.

Can a youth camp or lodge in Temagami order canvas for several boats?

Yes. Camps and lodges often have a few boats, docks and buildings that need covers, tops, seat repairs or awnings. Send a list with photos of each item, and we'll quote every piece before work starts. Patterns are kept on file, so matching replacements are simpler down the road.

Is financing available for Temagami customers?

Yes. Financing is offered through Financeit, on approved credit, for bigger jobs like a pontoon restoration, a full enclosure or new seating. It works the same whether you live in town, own an island cottage or come up for the summer. Ask when you get your quote and we'll explain how to apply.

Temiskaming Shores questions

Temiskaming Shores FAQ

5 questions See Temiskaming Shores →
Is travel to Temiskaming Shores included in my quote?

Travel is quoted separately for Temiskaming Shores. Before anyone drives up Highway 11, we will tell you what the measuring or install trip costs, along with the price of the work itself. If you would rather skip the trip cost, you can bring the boat, cushions or canvas to the Booth Road shop in North Bay and we will measure it there.

Can I drop my boat off in North Bay instead of having you come up?

Yes. Trailering the boat down from New Liskeard, Haileybury or Dymond and leaving it with us avoids the travel charge. Call ahead to book a drop-off time during shop hours, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. We will measure it on the Proliner, go over fabric and colours with you, and let you know when it is ready to pick up.

Will a cover made in North Bay stand up to the wind on Lake Timiskaming?

A cover holds up to wind when it fits the hull properly and is tied down well. Each cover is measured on your boat with a Prodim Proliner, cut on a CNC table and sewn from marine fabric, with straps and snaps placed for your boat. A tight cover does not catch air or flap, and that flapping is what wears most covers out.

Can you price a job from photos before I bring anything down from Haileybury?

Photos are a good place to start. Send pictures of the boat, the worn seats or the damaged canvas, plus the make, model and length if you have them. We can usually tell you what is involved and give you a rough idea before you make the drive. A firm quote comes once the boat or piece has been measured.

Can I bring just my seats or old canvas to the shop?

Yes, and for Temiskaming Shores customers it is often the easiest way to go. Helm chairs, cushions, sun pads, tops, covers and enclosures can all come off the boat and travel in a truck or car. Label what came from where, drop it at 102 Booth Rd, and we will repair, recover or rebuild it in the shop.

Muskoka questions

Muskoka FAQ

5 questions See Muskoka →
Is there an extra charge for coming to Muskoka?

Yes, travel to Muskoka is quoted separately from the work itself. Because the shop is roughly 130 km away in North Bay, the trip for measuring and installing is priced on its own line, so you can see exactly what it adds. If you would rather skip it, you can trailer the boat to Booth Road instead.

Can you fit a cover to a classic wooden boat in Muskoka?

Yes. Mahogany launches, cedar strips and antique runabouts are a good fit for digital templating, because the Proliner records the real shape of the hull, deck hardware and windshield instead of guessing from a size chart. The cover is cut from that data, and the pattern stays on file for the next one.

Can you measure a boat that's kept in a boathouse or on a lift?

Usually, yes. The Proliner works in tight spaces, so a boat in a boathouse slip or sitting on a lift can often be measured right where it is. Let us know how the boat is stored when you call, and send a photo of the space if you can, so we arrive ready.

Is it cheaper to bring my boat up to North Bay than to have you come to Muskoka?

Often it is, since there is no travel to quote when the boat comes to the shop. It is about a 1.5 hour drive up Highway 11 from Huntsville. For bigger jobs like pontoon restorations and full upholstery, dropping the boat at Booth Road also lets the work happen inside the shop.

Can you look at more than one boat on the same Muskoka visit?

Ask when you call. If you have a cover and a top to measure, or a neighbour on the same lake needs work too, we can look at planning both on one trip. Each job is still quoted on its own, with the travel spelled out on your quote.

French River questions

French River FAQ

5 questions See French River →
Can you measure a boat that is kept at a French River lodge or marina?

Possibly. On-site measuring can be arranged in some cases, so call us with the location and what the boat needs and we will tell you whether it makes sense. For most French River customers, the easiest route is to trailer the boat to our shop at 102 Booth Rd in North Bay, where we measure it with the Proliner.

How far is the shop from Noëlville?

Our shop at 102 Booth Rd in North Bay is roughly 100 km from Noëlville by road. Most people take Highway 64 north through Monetville to Verner, then Highway 17 east into North Bay. Sending photos first means we can talk through the job before you make the drive, and in many cases you only need to bring the boat in once.

What should I do about a fishing boat with soaked, torn seats?

Bring the seats in on their own, or the whole boat if the floor needs work too. We strip the old covers, check the foam and bases, replace anything that has soaked up water, and recover them in marine-grade vinyl. If the carpet is also done, SeaDek or woven vinyl flooring can be added in the same visit.

Can you make a top that comes down for trailering or low clearance?

Yes. We can build a bimini or camper top on a frame that folds down neatly, so it can be lowered for trailering, for storage or for low spots on the water. Let us know how you use the boat and how often you lower the top, and we will set up the fittings to suit. Always check your own clearance.

Do you make covers for farm equipment around Noëlville and Alban?

Yes. Custom sewing is not limited to boats. We make fitted covers for farm equipment, implements and trailers, along with heavy-duty tarps and curtain walls for sheds and shops. Send photos and rough measurements, and we will quote the piece before any work starts. Patterns are kept on file for replacements.

Nipissing Township questions

Nipissing Township FAQ

5 questions See Nipissing Township →
What is the best way to get a boat from Nipissing village to your shop?

Most people trailer it. From the village, take Highway 654 east to Callander, then Highway 11 north into North Bay. Our shop at 102 Booth Rd is roughly 40 km from Nipissing village. Send us photos before you come so we can plan the job, and in many cases a single visit covers the measuring.

My boat is kept on the lower South River. Can it be measured without pulling it out?

Sometimes. Covers, biminis and enclosures can often be measured with the boat in the water, as long as we can move around it safely. On-site measuring is arranged case by case, so call with the location and what you need. Seat and floor jobs usually go better at the shop, where we have the boat on its trailer.

Will you make a cover for a small fishing boat I use on McQuaby Lake?

Yes. We build fitted covers for aluminum fishing boats as well as bowriders, pontoons and larger boats. A trailerable travel cover that straps down is a good choice for a boat that moves between lakes, and a mooring cover suits one that sits at a dock. We measure the hull with the Proliner either way.

Can I get an awning for a cottage deck that looks out over South Bay?

Yes. We make retractable deck and patio awnings, fixed awnings over windows and doors, and screen rooms for homes and cottages. We come out to measure the building, since every deck and wall is different, and we talk through fabric colour and projection before anything is built.

Do you sew covers for trailers and machines that sit outside all winter in Commanda or Alsace?

We do. Custom sewing covers more than boats: fitted covers for utility and boat trailers, tractors and other equipment, snowmobile enclosures, UTV cabs and heavy tarps. Send a few photos and rough measurements and we will quote the piece before we start. Once it is patterned, a replacement is easy to make later.
