Proliner Digital Measuring & CNC Cutting in North Bay

Lavigne's Canvas Co. measures every boat with a Prodim Proliner digital measuring system, designs the pattern in CAD, and cuts it on an automated CNC cutting table in its shop at 102 Booth Rd in North Bay, Ontario. Digital patterns mean boat covers, tops, enclosures and seats fit the first time, and the pattern stays on file so it can be cut again years from now.

How a Custom Boat Cover Gets Made

The same four steps for every cover, bimini top, enclosure and seat that leaves the shop.

01

Measure

The Proliner records exact points on your boat: windshield frame, rails, bow and posts. No paper templates, no tape-measure guesswork.

02

Design

The measurements become a digital pattern. Curved panels are checked in 3D so the fit is right on screen before any fabric is cut.

Cut

The pattern goes straight to the CNC table, which cuts every panel and marks the stitch lines exactly where the pattern says.

Sew & fit

Panels are sewn by hand, fitted on your boat and checked snap by snap. Your pattern is saved for next time.

Why it matters

Digital Patterns vs. Paper Templates

The old way

Paper & plastic templates

  • Pattern traced by hand on the boat, then cut by hand
  • Small errors stack up across every panel and seam
  • Covers sag, pool water or need refitting
  • The template gets thrown out or lost after the job
The Lavigne way

Proliner + CAD + CNC

  • Exact points captured digitally with the Proliner
  • Every panel CNC-cut to the same pattern, with stitch lines marked
  • Fits the first time and sheds water
  • Your pattern stays on file for a replacement cover or top

Lavigne's Canvas Co. has been sewing marine canvas in North Bay since 1995. The Prodim Proliner, CAD design software and the CNC cutting table came later, and they changed how every job is built. Instead of tracing a paper pattern on your boat and hoping it transfers, the Proliner captures the shape of your windshield, frame and rails as digital points. That data becomes a pattern on screen, gets checked, and is sent to the cutter.

The result is consistency you can see. Seams line up because the CNC marks where they go. Snaps and zippers land where the pattern says. When a cover finally wears out after years of Northern Ontario sun and snow, the shop doesn't start over. It cuts a new one from the pattern on file. It's the same process behind the shop's award-winning work at the 2026 Marine Fabricators Conference ↗. Digital Measuring FAQ

Still have a question? Call the shop at 705-410-6872.

What is a Proliner?

A Proliner is a digital measuring system made by Prodim. A fine line pulled from the unit records exact points on the boat (windshield frame, rails, posts and snaps) and builds a digital template, replacing paper and plastic patterns.

Do I have to bring my boat to the shop to be measured?

No. Lavigne's can measure at the Booth Road shop in North Bay or on site within the mobile service area. For Temiskaming Shores and Muskoka, travel is quoted on top of the job. The boat does need to be measured in person; Lavigne's can't build a custom cover from photos or a size chart.

Can you make a replacement cover from my old pattern?

Yes. Digital patterns are kept on file, so a replacement cover, top or panel can be cut again from the same pattern if the boat and frame haven't changed.

Why does CNC cutting give a better fit?

Hand-cut panels drift a little on every cut. The CNC table cuts each panel to the exact shape of the digital pattern and marks the sewing lines, so seams line up, covers sit tight and water runs off instead of pooling.

What materials can the CNC table cut?

Marine canvas such as Sunbrella, marine vinyl for upholstery, clear vinyl window material, and other fabrics the shop uses for covers, tops, enclosures and seats.
